How to Repair Wood Furniture with Water Damage
Water damage to wooden furniture is one of the easiest things to repair after it has been affected by water or flooding. The fact that it is made of wood means that it can be restored back to its normal condition quite easily.
Usually, the wood has been in contact with water for a long time. As a consequence any minerals in the water will have had time to find their way into the wood itself. These minerals are usually calcium or magnesium which means the water is described “hard” and causes white staining marks.
Any repair work has to be done in the correct way as getting it wrong can make the situation worse. Below are some handy tips to repair wooden furniture with water damage.
- The first step is to rub lemon or orange oil onto the water stain. It is a good idea to allow the oil to work into the wood overnight or at least for a few hours.
- Once the oil has been allowed to work, wipe off an excess oil.
- Next get a hand towel and place over the affected area. Then get a warm to hot iron and place over the towel and move it around the area where the water stains are underneath. This should heat the wood to allow it to get rid of the build up of minerals caused by the water. Repeat this process until the white water marks have vanished.
- Another tip is to use mayonnaise on the water marks. The oil in the mayonnaise works in the same way as the orange oil and dissolves and minerals within the wood.
- White toothpaste has also been proven to work on wood with water marks. With a soft, clean cloth and a circular motion, rub the affected area until the ring disappears. Turn the cloth over and wipe off the excess toothpaste.
