How to Repair Water Damaged Carpet

Water damage to carpets is one of the most difficult tasks when dealing with water damage. The nature of carpet means that any dirty or sewage water and anything that lives in this type of water can become well ingrained within it. This can prove to be difficult to treat. The best piece of advice is to act quickly! Below are some recommendations that have been proven to work:

  1. First of all, as mentioned above, the number one thing to do is act quickly and your carpet can be saved. Try to deal with it within a couple of days. If not any bacteria in the dirty water can breed and cause disease. Get rid of any furniture in the room and make sure people do not walk on it while it is being treated. This will keep any contamination just to the room that you’re dealing with.
  2. Hire or purchase a dehumidifier. This will remove any water from the air in the room and dry it out. This will help with keeping any bacteria under control and prevent any further growth. If you can, a good idea is to open any doors or windows to allow fresh air to help with the drying process.
  3. The next thing to do is to pull up the carpet to gain access to the underlay. It is probably a good idea to discard these layers as they are relatively cheap and new layers will provide a good base from which to put the carpet on once it has been treated and cleaned.
  4. If possible take the whole carpet outside. Get a hose and wash all of the carpet fresh, clean water. If possible you may want to add a small amount of detergent that will aid in cleaning the carpet.  Treating the carpet inside will mean hiring a water extraction vacuum and using this to absorb any excess moisture in it until it has all been removed.
  5. The next stage can take quite a while. This is the drying out process of treating the carpet. If you have a sunny day, let the carpet dry outside and allow it to dry naturally.
  6. Once the carpet has dried you will want to make sure that it is completely clean. To do this apply a carpet disinfectant cleaner and treat the carpet thoroughly according to the instructions on the manufactures recommendations.
  7. Finally you may also want to purchase some carpet shampoo that will remove any remaining stains that may be present. This will ensure that you carpet has been fully treated and cleaned and hopefully looks like new again.

One question… what kind of shampoo do you recommend to clean carpets after you have dried them out. My carpet got flooded a few weeks ago and smells a bit. What cleaning shampoo should I use? Thank you
